Suryakumar Yadav Lauds Sanju Samson’s Grit and Team-First Attitude

Durban [South Africa], November 9, 2024: Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav heaped praise on Sanju Samson's stellar performance and unwavering commitment after Samson’s explosive 107-run knock propelled India to a resounding 61-run victory over South Africa in Durban. Samson’s innings, filled with powerful boundaries, showcased not only his exceptional skill but also his fearless approach—a quality that Suryakumar said embodies the Indian team’s new ethos.

Sanju Samson’s innings, packed with aggressive intent, left South African bowlers struggling to contain India’s momentum. His quick-fire century included multiple boundaries, as well as milestone celebrations that reflected his spirited character—a trait Suryakumar noted is something the team seeks to integrate into its playing style.

“The amount of hard work he has put in over the last few years, doing the basics diligently, is paying off now,” Suryakumar said during the post-match presentation. “He was in the 90s but still looking for a boundary, playing selflessly for the team. That shows the character of the man, and that's exactly what we look for,” he added.

India’s 61-run victory in Durban marks yet another win at Kingsmead, a ground where the team remains undefeated. Suryakumar admitted he was unaware of India’s unbeaten streak in Durban, but was thrilled with the team’s performance and the way they have upheld their fearless brand of cricket. “Is it? I did not know that! We haven’t changed our approach over the last few series. Very happy with the win,” he remarked.

The chase of 203 could have turned tense when South Africa’s experienced pair, David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen, came together at the crease. With both batsmen known for their ability to take games away, the tension was palpable, but Suryakumar brought on Varun Chakaravarthy in the 12th over—a strategic decision that proved to be the game’s turning point.

In a single over, Chakaravarthy dismantled South Africa’s hopes by dismissing both Miller and Klaasen, sparking a collapse. Ravi Bishnoi then capitalized on the momentum, taking wickets in quick succession to secure India’s victory. “That was the plan—going after the crucial wickets of Klaasen and Miller—and the way our spinners delivered was fantastic,” Suryakumar said.

Suryakumar closed by crediting his teammates’ fearless approach for making his captaincy smooth and enjoyable. “The boys have made my job easier. They bring that fearless attitude to the field, and they’re enjoying every moment on and off the field. That’s the brand of cricket we want to play,” he concluded. “Even if we lose a few wickets, we don’t shy away. If scoring 200 in 17 overs is possible, why not go for it?”

India will look to carry this winning momentum to Gqeberha for the second T20I against South Africa, with the team riding high on confidence and unity.
