Tehri Lake Cruise to Boost Tourism and Village Economy in Uttarakhand

“Uttarakhand launches cruise service on Tehri Lake to enhance tourism; CM Dhami announces discounts, infrastructure upgrades, and winter travel initiatives.”

Tehri Garhwal (Uttarakhand), December 15: Uttarakhand is set to introduce a cruise ship service on Tehri Lake, aiming to bolster tourism and promote village tourism in the region. The initiative is expected to benefit the local economy and attract visitors to explore the state’s scenic landscapes and cultural heritage.

Vijay Bisht, Manager of the cruise service, described it as a transformative step for regional tourism. “Tehri Dam, the highest dam in the world, offers endless possibilities. This cruise service will give a major boost to tourism. Local communities, who felt discouraged after the dam’s construction, will now see renewed opportunities. We also plan to promote village tourism alongside this project,” he said.

Government Initiatives to Promote Tourism

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has also announced several measures to enhance the state’s appeal to tourists during the winter season. A 25% discount on stays at Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) hotels has been introduced to encourage more visitors.

In a meeting held at the secretariat, CM Dhami emphasized strengthening security arrangements for winter travelers, upgrading emergency management systems during bad weather, and expediting road repairs. He also directed officials to construct parking lots on travel routes and improve infrastructure to accommodate more devotees during the 2025 Chardham Yatra.

Focus on Hidden Destinations and Pilgrimage Sites

The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of promoting Uttarakhand’s lesser-known winter destinations and hidden gems. He stressed prioritizing health services, cleanliness, and safe accommodations for tourists and pilgrims.

To ensure smooth winter tourism and pilgrimage experiences, Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) has been instructed to prepare for uninterrupted power supply in key tourist areas. Regional units have been mobilized to guarantee resource availability in popular destinations such as Mussoorie, Auli, Joshimath, Dhanaulti, Haridwar, and Rishikesh.

Winter Tourism on the Rise

With initiatives like the Tehri Lake cruise service, discounts on GMVN accommodations, and improved infrastructure, the Uttarakhand government is making significant efforts to position the state as a premier winter tourism and pilgrimage destination.
