Tilak Varma Reveals Key Advice That Helped Seal India's Nail-Biting Win
Chennai, January 26: After playing a stellar knock to guide India to a nail-biting two-wicket victory over England in the second T20I, Tilak Varma shared insights into the key conversations and strategies that made the thrilling chase a success.
Tilak, who remained unbeaten on 72 off 55 deliveries, revealed how a critical piece of advice to Ravi Bishnoi at the climax helped ease the pressure.
“I told him (Bishnoi) to hold his shape and hit the gap. He played a flick and hit a four off Livingstone, which made it a bit easier,” Tilak said after being named Player of the Match.
Chasing 166, India found themselves in a tense situation as England’s debutant Brydon Carse wreaked havoc with his fiery spell. Tilak, the set batter, carried the hopes of the team but needed Bishnoi’s support to fend off the final overs.
With India needing 20 off the last three overs, Bishnoi played crucial shots, including two boundaries off Carse and Livingstone, which tilted the momentum in India’s favor.
Tilak credited head coach Gautam Gambhir for his advice on adapting to match situations.
“The wicket was slightly two-paced. Gautam sir told me yesterday, ‘Whatever happens, play according to the situation. If the team needs ten in an over, take charge; if not, stand till the end,'” Tilak explained.
The Indian team’s meticulous preparation in the nets proved vital in countering England’s fiery pace attack, led by Mark Wood and Jofra Archer.
“The team discussed that a left-right combination would be a good option, making it harder for opposition bowlers. We prepared well, facing quicker bowlers in South Africa. Archer and Wood are quick, but the work we put in during net sessions paid off,” Tilak noted.
With a 2-0 lead in the five-match series, India is brimming with confidence as they head into the third T20I. Tilak’s composure and clutch performance have solidified his reputation as a dependable match-winner, setting the stage for more high-octane cricket.
