Magdeburg [Germany], December 21: A tragic incident unfolded at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, on Friday evening, leaving two people dead, including an adult and a toddler, and 68 others injured in what authorities suspect was a deliberate car attack, CNN reported.
The festive atmosphere turned into a scene of chaos and sorrow when a vehicle plowed into a crowd of visitors at the popular holiday market. Among the 68 injured, 15 sustained severe injuries, while 37 suffered moderate injuries, and 16 had minor wounds.
Emergency services responded promptly, with around 100 firefighters and 50 rescue personnel arriving on the scene to provide medical assistance and transport victims to nearby hospitals.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser expressed her shock and grief over the incident, assuring the public that authorities are actively investigating the circumstances.
“This news from Magdeburg is deeply shocking. The emergency services are doing everything they can to care for the injured and save lives. All our thoughts are with the victims and their families,” Faeser wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Saxony-Anhalt Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff confirmed that the driver of the vehicle has been apprehended. Initial investigations suggest the suspect acted alone, and authorities believe there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
“We are currently compiling all available data and conducting the interrogation. According to preliminary information, this was an individual perpetrator, and there is no longer any danger to the city,” Haseloff stated in a televised address.
While authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attack, the local community remains deeply shaken by the loss of life and the trauma caused during what should have been a joyous seasonal gathering.
Officials have reassured citizens that security measures are being reinforced across similar public spaces to prevent further tragedies.
As Magdeburg mourns, both authorities and citizens stand united in supporting the injured and honoring the memories of those lost in this heartbreaking incident.
