December 22, 2024: A devastating highway crash near Bengaluru claimed six lives and reignited discussions about the critical need for safer roads in India. The incident involved a Volvo XC90—a vehicle widely regarded as a benchmark for safety— which was crushed by a container truck that jumped the divider on the Nelmangala-Tumkuru highway.

The victims included Chandram Yegapagol (48), his wife Gourabai (42), son Gyan (16), daughter Deeksha (12), sister-in-law Vijayalakshmi (36), and six-year-old Arya. Chandram Yegapagol, the CEO of Bengaluru-based IAST Software Solutions, had purchased the SUV just two months ago. The family was reportedly en route to Sangli, Maharashtra, to visit Chandram’s father.
The crash occurred when a loaded container truck swerved to avoid a car that braked suddenly on the highway, according to the truck driver, Arif, who sustained injuries in the accident. “A car in front of me hit the brakes suddenly. When I hit the brakes, the truck kept going forward. To save the car, I swerved to the right, and the truck jumped the divider,” Arif told the media.
The truck, which was transporting aluminum, collided with a milk truck before crushing the Volvo. Police confirmed that Chandram, who was driving the SUV, was not at fault. Arif has been booked for rash driving and causing death by negligence.

Senior police official CK Baba told Deccan Herald that six cranes were required to lift the heavily loaded truck off the crushed SUV, after which the victims’ bodies were retrieved one by one.
The accident has sparked widespread conversations on social media. Many users emphasized that even the safest cars cannot guarantee survival in the absence of safe driving and well-maintained road conditions.
A popular safe driving advocacy handle, DriveSmart, shared chilling images of the wreckage, tweeting: “This picture reminds us that safety on the road requires more than just a safe car. Safe roads, safe drivers, and safe vehicles are all essential for survival.”
While Volvo vehicles are known for their advanced safety features, experts and social media users pointed out that no car can withstand the immense force of a heavily loaded container truck. Calls have grown louder for Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to implement stricter road safety regulations.
During a recent Lok Sabha discussion on India’s road accident crisis, Gadkari expressed his disappointment at the country’s poor track record. “Forget reducing the number of accidents, they have increased. When I attend international conferences on road accidents, I try to hide my face,” he said.
The minister emphasized the need for societal change and adherence to traffic laws to prevent such tragedies. Government data reveals that over 1.7 lakh people lost their lives in road accidents last year, amounting to approximately 470 fatalities daily, with the majority of victims aged 18-34.
This incident is a grim reminder that even the best-engineered safety features are not enough to prevent fatalities when road infrastructure, driver behavior, and heavy vehicle regulations fall short. A multi-pronged approach involving stricter laws, better infrastructure, and public awareness is essential to curb the rising toll of road accidents in India.
