Tropical Weather Watch: Potential System Brewing In The Gulf

July 16, 2025: A powerful weather system soaking Florida this week could develop into the season’s fourth named storm — Tropical Storm Dexter, according to the National Weather Service. Though not yet a tropical storm, the disturbance was producing torrential rainfall across the peninsula as it pushed westward from Florida’s east coast on Tuesday.

Forecasters warn of flash flooding through midweek, especially as the low-pressure system crosses the state into the northeastern and north-central Gulf of Mexico, where environmental conditions appear ripe for tropical development.

If the storm strengthens, it will follow Andrea, Barry, and Chantal, the three named storms that have already formed during the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Chantal, the most recent, caused deadly flooding in North Carolina just days ago.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts an above-average hurricane season this year, with 13 to 19 named storms, including up to five major hurricanes. Colorado State University also forecasts 17 named storms, nine hurricanes, and four major hurricanes.

Weather Modification Rumors and State Response

As concerns over storm frequency and intensity rise, Florida is also addressing unfounded weather modification fears. Attorney General James Uthmeier announced that starting in October, Florida airports must report any aircraft engaged in “weather modification” activities under a new state law.

This follows viral social media misinformation claiming cloud seeding caused fatal flash floods in Texas earlier this month — a theory experts have repeatedly debunked. Uthmeier emphasized compliance, stating airports could face penalties, including criminal charges, for failing to follow the new regulation.

What’s Next?

The potential Tropical Storm Dexter is being monitored closely. The official forecast track and storm details are expected later this week as the system moves into the Gulf, where conditions may allow it to organize more rapidly.
