"Trudeau Using Trade War to Stay in Power!" – Trump Accuses Canadian PM After Heated Call
Washington DC, March 6 – US President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, accusing him of using the ongoing trade dispute to remain in power.
The remarks came after a telephonic conversation between the two leaders, which Trump later detailed on Truth Social, his social media platform.
“He (Trudeau) was unable to tell me when the Canadian Election is taking place, which made me curious—like, what’s going on here? I then realized he is trying to use this issue to stay in power,” Trump wrote.
The US-Canada tensions escalated after Trump’s blanket 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada took effect on Tuesday. Additionally, he doubled tariffs on all Chinese imports from 10% to 20%, further intensifying the global trade war.
China and Canada retaliated with tariffs on American goods, raising concerns over economic instability. However, in a temporary relief move, Trump granted a one-month exemption on auto tariffs for Mexico and Canada, confirmed by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Beyond trade disputes, Trump also criticized Canada’s border policies, accusing Trudeau’s government of allowing fentanyl smuggling into the US.
“Many people have died from fentanyl that came through the Borders of Canada and Mexico, and nothing has convinced me that it has stopped,” Trump claimed.
He further alleged that Canada’s weak border control has contributed to illegal immigration into the US, adding:
“I also told Governor Justin Trudeau of Canada that he largely caused the problems we have because of his Weak Border Policies, which allowed tremendous amounts of Fentanyl, and Illegal Aliens, to pour into the United States. These policies are responsible for the death of many people!”
Despite the heated exchange, Trump described the call as ending in a “somewhat” friendly manner but maintained his stance that Canada must do more to control fentanyl smuggling and secure its borders.
With tensions mounting over tariffs, border security, and trade policies, the US-Canada relationship faces yet another strain as both leaders prepare for potential economic and diplomatic repercussions.
Will Trudeau navigate this crisis successfully, or is Trump’s trade war set to escalate even further? The next few weeks will be crucial.
