Trump Administration Pushes UN Resolution on Ukraine—Without Mentioning Russia

The US urges Ukraine to withdraw its annual UN resolution condemning Russia, proposing instead a neutral peace statement—a move that has stunned Kyiv and signaled growing tensions between the two allies.

Washington DC [USA], February 23: The Donald Trump administration has asked Ukraine to withdraw its annual United Nations resolution condemning Russia’s war, proposing instead a US-sponsored statement calling for peace—without mentioning Russia’s responsibility for the conflict, The Washington Post reported.

The proposal, conveyed to Kyiv on Friday, has shocked Ukrainian officials, who have refused to comply ahead of a crucial UN General Assembly vote on Monday, coinciding with the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

“A Stunning Shift in US Position”—Growing Strains Between Washington and Kyiv

The sudden change in US policy at the United Nations marks a dramatic departure from Washington’s previous stance of strongly condemning Russia and backing Ukraine.

According to The Washington Post, this move highlights increasing tensions between Kyiv and Washington, especially as President Trump has recently:

  • Reached out to Russian President Vladimir Putin
  • Blamed Ukraine for starting the war
  • Called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a “dictator”
  • Held high-level US-Russia talks—excluding Ukraine

Unresolved Dispute—US May Push for Alternative Resolution

With Ukraine standing firm on keeping its resolution in place, US officials are now considering introducing their own version at the UN Security Council, according to anonymous diplomats.

However, it remains unclear how this would impact Ukraine’s General Assembly resolution or how other UN member states will respond.

US Secretary of State: “Our Resolution Charts a Path to Peace”

Despite the pushback from Ukraine, the Trump administration appears committed to advancing its proposal.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended Washington’s stance, stating on Friday:

“The United States has proposed a simple, historic resolution in the United Nations that we urge all member states to support in order to chart a path to peace.”

As tensions escalate, the UN General Assembly vote on Monday is expected to reveal where global powers stand on the conflict—and whether Ukraine can maintain strong diplomatic backing despite shifting US priorities.
