Trump Announces 25% Tariffs on Mexico and Canada, Suggests Canada Could Become 51st State

President Trump plans to impose significant tariffs starting February 1, citing immigration, trade deficits, and security concerns.

Washington, DC [US], January 21: US President Donald Trump announced plans to implement a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, effective February 1, citing concerns over immigration, drug trafficking, and trade imbalances.

Speaking while signing executive orders, Trump justified the tariffs, saying, “We are thinking in terms of 25 percent on Mexico and Canada because they’re allowing vast numbers of people … and fentanyl to come in.”

When pressed on the timeline, Trump confirmed, “I think we’ll do it Feb. 1.”

Tariff Threats and Trade Concerns

During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump threatened tariffs on Mexico, the US’s top trading partner, unless their government reduced migrant flows at the southern border. Trump has also targeted Canada and China, indicating his administration’s intent to leverage tariffs to address trade deficits.

Experts, however, have warned that such measures could act as a tax on American consumers, raising prices on goods imported from these nations.

Canada as the 51st State?

On January 9, Trump reiterated criticism of Canada’s trade practices and floated the controversial idea of incorporating Canada as the 51st state of the United States.

“I called them Governor Trudeau because they should be the 51st state, really. It would make a great state. The people of Canada like it. They pay lower taxes and have virtually no military,” Trump remarked during a press conference in Palm Beach, Florida.

Trump alleged that Canada has failed to meet NATO defense spending commitments and accused the US of subsidizing the country by $200 to $250 billion annually.

Trade and Industry Comments

The President also expressed concerns over Canada’s role in the American car industry, claiming it had taken 20% of US car manufacturing.

“I’d rather have it done in Detroit or South Carolina. We don’t need Canada for that. We don’t need Canada for lumber, energy, oil, or gas. We have everything we need right here,” Trump stated.

In a direct conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Trump claimed to have said, “Why are we subsidizing you $200 billion a year?” and suggested Canada’s reliance on the US was unsustainable.

According to Trump, Trudeau admitted that without US support, “Canada would be obliterated.”
