Trump Calls Elon Musk a ‘Trainwreck’ Over Third Party Bid After EV Mandate Clash in ‘Big Beautiful Bill’
Washington, July 7 —
US President Donald Trump has launched a blistering attack on Elon Musk, his former advisor and once staunch ally, for proposing a third political party. Trump branded the Tesla and SpaceX CEO a “trainwreck” who has gone “completely off the rails”, especially after Musk unveiled his plans to launch the “America Party” — a new political formation aimed at offering voters an alternative to the Republicans and Democrats.
Trump took to Truth Social, his social media platform, to slam Musk just days after the president signed into law the controversial “Big Beautiful Bill,” which eliminates green energy subsidies — a move Musk strongly opposed due to its direct impact on Tesla’s business model.
“I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks,” Trump wrote. “He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States – The System seems not designed for them.”
Musk had floated the idea of starting a new party via a poll on X (formerly Twitter), where 65% of respondents supported the move. Shortly after the bill passed, Musk officially announced the formation of the “America Party”, promising to “give Americans their freedom back” and accusing both major parties of bankrupting the country.
This was viewed as a direct challenge to Trump, especially after Musk criticized the bill as a wasteful measure that would hurt clean energy innovation and reinforce establishment politics.
According to Trump, the root of Musk’s frustration lies in the bill’s removal of the Electric Vehicle (EV) Mandate, which had previously required auto manufacturers to meet specific EV production targets and allowed Tesla to benefit from federal tax credits.
“It is a Great Bill,” Trump wrote, “but unfortunately for Elon, it eliminates the ridiculous Electric Vehicle (EV) Mandate, which would have forced everyone to buy an Electric Car in a short period of time.”
Trump claimed that Musk had previously endorsed the bill despite being aware of the EV rollback and expressed surprise at Musk’s current outcry.
“He said he had no problems with that — I was very surprised!” Trump added.
In another eyebrow-raising accusation, Trump alleged that Musk lobbied to have a close associate appointed as NASA administrator, a move the president blocked after discovering the individual was a “blue-blooded Democrat.”
“Elon tried to push a friend for NASA, but when I learned his pick was a full-on Democrat, I shut it down,” Trump claimed.
Since Musk’s departure from Trump’s advisory circle and his criticism of the “Big Beautiful Bill,” tensions have escalated. Trump has publicly threatened to cut federal contracts awarded to Tesla and SpaceX, which collectively benefit from billions in subsidies and government work, including space exploration and defense technology partnerships.
This marks a dramatic shift in their relationship, as Musk was once a vocal supporter of Trump’s economic policies and space initiatives.
