Trump Criticises Zelenskyy’s Resistance, Suggests War Could Have Been Avoided

“In a controversial statement, Trump claims Ukraine’s President should have negotiated with Russia, sparking debate over his understanding of the Ukraine-Russia conflict.”

January 25, 2025: In a recent Fox News interview, President Donald Trump suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should not have resisted Russia’s invasion, citing the overwhelming power imbalance between the two nations. “Zelenskyy was fighting a much bigger entity, much bigger, much more powerful,” Trump said, emphasising Russia’s superior military strength. “He shouldn’t have done that, because we could have made a deal.”

Trump criticized Zelenskyy’s decision to stand against Russia, asserting that a negotiated agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin could have avoided the war. “I could have made that deal so easily, and Zelenskyy decided that ‘I want to fight,'” Trump claimed, suggesting that the Ukrainian leader’s resistance was a strategic mistake.

This perspective starkly contrasts with the stance of former President Joe Biden, who has supported Ukraine’s right to defend itself and imposed severe sanctions on Russia following its invasion. Biden has consistently praised Zelenskyy’s leadership and provided significant military and financial aid to Ukraine.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in devastating casualties, estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands. Trump’s comments have sparked criticism and raised questions about his approach to foreign policy, particularly his understanding of the complexities of the Ukraine-Russia war. While Trump has claimed he could end the war in a single day, his suggestion that Ukraine should not have resisted Russia’s aggression has fueled concerns among foreign policy analysts.

In September, Trump met with Zelenskyy and expressed his intention to mediate a resolution to the conflict. “We’re going to work very much with both parties to try and get this settled and get it worked out,” Trump said before their meeting. He later added that he would aim for a deal “that’s good for both sides.”

Despite these assertions, Trump also issued a warning to Russia, stating that if the war is not resolved soon, the United States would impose “massive tariffs” and “big sanctions” on Moscow. This dual approach has drawn mixed reactions, with critics questioning the feasibility of his proposed solutions.

As the war continues with no clear end in sight, Trump’s remarks have reignited debates about U.S. foreign policy strategies and the broader implications of the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
