Trump on Gold Card Program: "I Think It's Going to Sell Like Crazy"
Washington DC [US], February 27: US President Donald Trump has expressed high expectations for the newly launched Gold Card program, saying he believes it will be a massive success.
“Maybe it will sell like crazy. I happen to think it’s going to sell like crazy. It’s a bargain,” Trump remarked during his first Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
The Gold Card program, which grants US residency to wealthy foreigners in exchange for a USD 5 million investment, aims to monetize the immigration system while simultaneously addressing labor shortages and national debt reduction.
Addressing concerns about the flaws in the current immigration system, Trump criticized how top global talent struggles to remain in the US due to uncertain visa regulations.
“I get calls from companies wanting to hire the number one student at a school—someone from India, China, Japan, Harvard, Wharton, Yale. They graduate top of their class, get job offers, and then the offers are rescinded because no one knows if they can stay in the country,” Trump explained.
To solve this issue, Trump introduced the Gold Card, allowing companies to buy residency slots for top international graduates.
“Companies can go and buy a Gold Card, use it for recruitment, and at the same time, their money helps pay down our debt. It’s a win-win,” he said.
Trump emphasized that businesses operating within the US would be exempt from tariffs, while those outside the country would face import taxes.
“If you’re in the country, there is no tariff. If you’re out, you have to pay tariffs. That’s going to be a great investment,” he added.
The USD 5 million investment requirement for a Gold Card would stimulate job creation, increase tax revenues, and help pay off the national debt, according to Trump.
“We want productive people. The people who can pay USD 5 million will create jobs, spend money, and bring businesses into the country. That’s what we need,” he said.
The US national debt has surpassed USD 36.22 trillion, according to US Treasury fiscal data. Trump believes the Gold Card initiative could offset some of this burden while bolstering the economy.
With the program now in place, all eyes are on whether wealthy investors will flock to this opportunity and whether it will truly “sell like crazy”, as Trump predicts.
