Trump Repeats Claim of Mediating India-Pakistan Ceasefire, Citing Trade Leverage

The US President credits his diplomacy and trade warnings for ending cross-border hostilities after Operation Sindoor

May 31, 2025: US President Donald Trump on Friday reiterated his claim that he personally played a key role in stopping the recent cross-border conflict between India and Pakistan, saying he told both countries the US could not trade with nations engaged in conflict.

“We stopped India and Pakistan from fighting. I believe that could have turned into a nuclear disaster,” Trump said at a press conference in the Oval Office, standing alongside Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who recently stepped down from his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency.

Trump praised the “great leaders” of India and Pakistan, saying “they understood, and they agreed, and that all stopped.” He added: “We talked trade and said ‘we can’t trade with people that are shooting at each other and potentially using nuclear weapons.’”

Trump emphasized that America’s own military strength gives him unique leverage in ending global conflicts:
“We are stopping others from fighting also, because ultimately, we can fight better than anybody. We have the greatest military in the world.”

The remarks come after a series of deadly incidents. On April 22, 26 civilians were killed in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in a terror attack that triggered Operation Sindoor by India. India launched precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7, followed by four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.

On May 10, Indian and Pakistani military officials reportedly reached an understanding to halt hostilities immediately, with Indian sources saying no third party was involved. But Trump has repeatedly claimed that he helped secure the ceasefire through diplomatic pressure and trade leverage.

“We told them we’ll do a lot of trade with you if you stop,” Trump said, sticking to his earlier assertions about playing peacemaker.
