Trump to Meet Putin Quickly After Inauguration, Cites Russia's Ukraine War Struggles
January 14, 2025: Washington, D.C.: President-elect Donald Trump has revealed plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin “very quickly” after his inauguration on January 20. Trump suggested that Putin is discontented with the ongoing war in Ukraine, stating, “It hasn’t gone exactly well for him.”

While Trump did not specify a date for the meeting, he indicated that discussions with the Russian leader are imminent, marking a potential turning point in US-Russia relations. This would be the first direct engagement between leaders of the two nations since the onset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Speaking to Newsmax on Monday, Trump emphasized Putin’s dissatisfaction with the war’s progress. “I can’t imagine he’s too thrilled about the way it’s gone,” Trump remarked, adding that the conflict has not yielded favorable outcomes for Russia.

Acknowledging his eagerness to engage diplomatically, Trump stated, “I know he wants to meet, and I’m going to meet very quickly.” He noted that certain actions, such as a direct meeting with Putin, require him to be officially sworn in.
Mike Waltz, Trump’s incoming national security advisor, also confirmed the likelihood of a phone call between Trump and Putin in the coming weeks, further fueling speculation about a possible resolution to the conflict.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has led to significant loss of life, displaced millions, and strained Moscow’s relationships with Western nations to levels not seen since the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Amid the conflict, Trump’s stance has sparked concerns, with critics fearing that his approach could compromise Ukraine’s sovereignty in favor of striking a peace deal with Russia.
Set to become the oldest president in US history at 78, Trump will return to the White House with bold promises of ushering in a “golden age.” However, his controversial rhetoric—including territorial threats against allies like Canada—has raised alarm internationally.
In addition to addressing the Ukraine war, Trump has vowed to tackle domestic issues, including mass deportations and retribution against political adversaries, signaling a potentially tumultuous term ahead.
As the world watches Trump’s first moves in office, his meeting with Putin could redefine not only US-Russia relations but also the broader geopolitical landscape.
