In a fiery interview, Donald Trump revealed his frustration with Vladimir Putin over Ukraine, and threatened steep secondary tariffs on Russian oil if peace talks fail.
March 30, 2025: US President Donald Trump has lashed out at Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressing that he was “very angry” and “pissed off” after Putin questioned the legitimacy of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump made the comments during a candid Sunday morning interview with NBC News.

He confirmed that Putin was aware of his displeasure, though he emphasized that the two continue to share a “very good relationship,” adding that his anger “dissipates quickly if Putin does the right thing.”

Putin, just days earlier, had stirred controversy by suggesting a transitional administration be installed in Ukraine—a move widely seen as an attempt to oust Zelensky.
🇺🇸💥 Trump Threatens Secondary Tariffs on Russian Oil
Trump further raised eyebrows by threatening to impose secondary tariffs on all Russian oil exports if peace talks between the two nations fail.

“If Russia and I can’t come to an agreement on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine — and if I believe it’s Russia’s fault, which it might not be — I will place secondary tariffs on all oil coming out of Russia,” Trump warned.
He added that these tariffs could be as high as 25%, significantly impacting anyone doing business with Moscow.
This isn’t the first time Trump has criticized Ukraine’s leadership either. Recently, he called Zelensky a tyrant, stating he was “sick” of how the Ukrainian president was handling the ongoing war.
📞 Trump-Putin Phone Call: A Bid for Peace?
The White House confirmed that Trump and Putin had a lengthy phone call on March 18, during which they discussed US-Russia relations and the Ukraine crisis. Trump claimed the conversation led to “movement towards peace” in the war-torn region.
Earlier this month, Russia and Ukraine agreed to a partial truce, providing safe passage in the Black Sea and pledging to avoid attacking each other’s energy infrastructure.
As part of his re-election campaign, Trump has vowed to end the war in Ukraine, calling it his top foreign policy priority.
