Trump Vows to Reclaim Panama Canal, Renames Gulf of Mexico in Inaugural Address

In his inaugural speech, President Donald Trump targets China’s influence on the Panama Canal and announces the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico

Washington, DC [US], January 21: During his inaugural address as the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump made bold declarations regarding US sovereignty and global influence, promising to reclaim control over the Panama Canal and renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

Trump accused China of “operating” the Panama Canal and criticized Panama for “unfair treatment” of the US, referencing excessive fees imposed on American ships using the vital waterway.

“The United States spent more money than ever on a project before, and lost 38 lives building the Panama Canal. We have been treated very badly from this foolish gift that should never have been made. Panama’s promise to us has been broken,” Trump said during his address at the US Capitol on Monday.

Trump Targets Panama Canal Policies

After winning the presidential election last November, Trump previously threatened to take control of the Panama Canal, claiming excessive charges and inadequate access for US Navy and commerce.

“Our Navy and Commerce have been treated in a very unfair and injudicious way. The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform in November.

Constructed by the US in 1914, the Panama Canal was operated by Washington until 1999, when it was fully handed over to Panama following decades of joint administration.

During his speech, Trump also alluded to China’s growing influence over the canal, highlighting it as a critical national security and trade concern.

Renaming the Gulf of Mexico

Another controversial move announced during his speech was Trump’s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, asserting American dominance over the region.

“America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on Earth— inspiring the awe and admiration of the entire world,” Trump declared.

Swearing-In Ceremony

Donald Trump was officially sworn in during the 60th Presidential Inauguration at the US Capitol. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice John Roberts.
