"Trump's Border Policies Are Driven by Common Sense"—White House Defends Immigration Crackdown
“In President Trump’s first month back in office alone, illegal border crossings hit lows not seen in decades—down 94% over the last year. While interior arrests are up 134%,” Leavitt said during a press briefing on Tuesday (local time).
She also noted that only 220 illegal crossings were recorded on Saturday, marking a 15-year low.
Leavitt cited a “reverse migration effect,” suggesting that tougher border enforcement is discouraging migrants from even attempting to enter the US.
“Fox recently reported that a San Diego migrant shelter is closing its doors after saying they have not received new asylum-seeking families or individuals since January 20th. We all know what happened on January 20th, don’t we?” she remarked, referring to Trump’s inauguration.
She also referenced reports from The Associated Press, stating that migrants have started abandoning their journeys and heading back home due to the new, stricter security measures under Trump’s administration.
Leavitt argued that Americans overwhelmingly support Trump’s policies, citing a Harvard-Harris poll that indicates high approval ratings for his immigration and government efficiency efforts:
✅ 81% support deporting illegal migrant criminals
✅ 76% approve of anti-fraud measures in government spending
✅ 76% favor closing the border
✅ 69% back banning transgender athletes from women’s sports
✅ 65% support eliminating race-based preferences in hiring and contracts
✅ 61% approve of Trump’s reciprocal tariff policy
“Despite what many Democrats and media members want you to believe, the Trump agenda is not only necessary, but it is overwhelmingly popular. Why? Because it’s driven by common sense,” Leavitt asserted.
Leavitt reaffirmed Trump’s commitment to expanding the border wall, calling it a “signature promise” and a proven success.
“People laughed at him when he first talked about building the wall in 2015 and 2016. But where Trump’s wall was built, illegal crossings dropped by 87%. It is an incredible deterrent against illegal migrant caravans,” she stated.
She also criticized Democrats for selling off materials that had been secured for further construction, calling it “an egregious misuse of taxpayer money.”
“They let those resources rot at the southern border. They actually sold them for pennies on the dollar,” she claimed, promising that Trump’s team is committed to resuming wall construction.
As the immigration debate intensifies, Trump’s administration is doubling down on border security, deportations, and stringent asylum policies. Leavitt’s statements highlight the administration’s focus on strong enforcement measures—a stance that continues to polarize American politics.
📌 “The border wall is working, Trump’s policies are working, and the numbers speak for themselves,” she concluded.
