Tsunami Alert in Europe After Powerful 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Greece’s Crete Coast

Seismic activity near Crete triggers regional tsunami evaluation as tremors felt across eastern Mediterranean

Athens, May 22, 2025 – A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Crete, Greece early Thursday, prompting tsunami alerts and emergency assessments across the eastern Mediterranean region. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported the quake struck at a depth of 77 km beneath the earth’s surface.

Following the tremors, authorities activated a tsunami evaluation for coastal Greece, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). Experts are currently assessing the risk, depending on the earthquake’s proximity to coastal zones.

“Depending on earthquake-coastline distance, tsunamis can be local (<100 km), regional (<1,000 km), or distant (>1,000 km),” the EMSC stated.

Conflicting Magnitudes Reported

  • GFZ: 6.0 magnitude
  • Institute of Geodynamics, Greece: 6.1 magnitude
  • EMSC: 6.3 magnitude

Despite varying assessments, the earthquake was significant enough to trigger emergency response protocols, particularly for southern Crete and coastal regions.

Tremors Felt Across Region

Tremors were reported across neighboring countries including Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, and Israel. No immediate damage or casualties were reported, but emergency services remain on high alert.

Recent Seismic Activity in Greece

This event follows a string of seismic disturbances in the region:

  • May 13, 2025: A 6.1 magnitude quake struck near the island of Kasos, triggering a similar tsunami alert.
  • Earlier in 2025: Over 18,400 minor quakes were recorded between January 26 and February 13 near the Cyclades island group, according to the University of Athens Seismology Lab.

Greece, located along several major fault lines, is considered one of Europe’s most earthquake-prone regions.

Precautionary Measures in Place

Emergency authorities have advised residents and tourists near southern coastal zones to stay away from the shoreline until further notice. Search and rescue teams, along with disaster response units, are on standby in affected areas.
