London and Bedfordshire brace for extreme heat, health alerts issued, and events like Wimbledon and Glastonbury impacted

London, June 30 —A scorching heatwave gripping the UK is expected to peak on Monday, with temperatures potentially soaring to 34°C in parts of Greater London and Bedfordshire. Forecasters say there is even a small chance the mercury could touch 35°C, putting this day among the top three hottest June days on record.

While not expected to beat the all-time June high of 35.6°C recorded in 1976, the intensity of this heatwave has already led to health alerts, travel advisories, and precautionary changes at major events like Glastonbury Festival and Wimbledon, which will experience its hottest opening day ever.

Health Risks and Safety Alerts Issued

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber heat health alerts across London, the South East, South West, East and West Midlands, East of England, and Yorkshire and the Humber — in effect until 9:00 AM BST on Wednesday. A yellow alert is in place for North West England, while Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the North East remain unaffected.

The extreme temperatures could result in increased mortality, especially among vulnerable populations. The London Fire Brigade has also warned of a “severe” risk of wildfires, with Craig Bennett, CEO of The Wildlife Trusts, expressing concern about parched landscapes and dried grasses, which threaten local wildlife.

What to Expect and How to Stay Safe

  • Daytime highs: Up to 34–35°C in southern England
  • Nighttime lows: Around 20°C, adding to discomfort
  • Cooler regions: Scotland and Northern Ireland to see 17–22°C, with some rain

The UKHSA advises people to avoid direct sun exposure between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, wear sunscreen, and stay hydrated.
