“We Stand with Ukraine for as Long as It Takes” – UK PM Keir Starmer Reassures Zelenskyy

London, March 2: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to 10 Downing Street on Saturday, reaffirming the UK’s steadfast support for Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia. The meeting came just a day after Zelenskyy’s tense exchange with former US President Donald Trump at the White House, highlighting concerns over Western commitment to Ukraine’s cause.

As Zelenskyy arrived, crowds outside cheered in solidarity, a moment that underscored the UK’s continued public and political backing for Ukraine.

“You’re very, very welcome here in Downing Street,” Starmer told Zelenskyy. “And as you heard from the cheers on the street outside, you have full backing across the United Kingdom. We stand with you, with Ukraine, for as long as it may take.”

In response, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the UK’s ongoing support, emphasizing the strength of their partnership.

“I want to thank you, the people of the United Kingdom, for such big support from the very beginning of this war,” Zelenskyy said. “I’m very happy that His Majesty the King accepted my meeting tomorrow, and we are very happy in Ukraine that we have such a strategic partner.”

UK-Ukraine Sign £2.26 Billion Defence Loan Agreement

During the meeting, the UK and Ukraine signed a £2.26 billion (USD 2.84 billion) loan agreement aimed at boosting Ukraine’s defence capabilities. The deal, which will be repaid using profits from frozen Russian sovereign assets, was signed virtually by UK Finance Minister Rachel Reeves and Ukrainian Finance Minister Sergii Marchenko, while Starmer and Zelenskyy held discussions in London.

The agreement signals Britain’s continued military and financial support, with London describing it as proof of the UK’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine.

Focus on Strengthening European Defence Cooperation

Starmer’s office confirmed that the discussions were part of broader efforts to secure a “just and enduring peace” for Ukraine. Sunday’s European leaders’ summit will also focus on defence cooperation amid growing fears about whether the US will maintain its support for Ukraine and NATO.

With uncertainties surrounding America’s long-term commitment, European leaders are strategizing on strengthening their military alliances and ensuring Ukraine’s security is not compromised.

Final Thoughts: A Critical Moment for Ukraine’s Future

Zelenskyy’s visit to London comes at a crucial time, as Ukraine seeks renewed support from its Western allies. While tensions with Trump signal potential shifts in US policy, the UK’s firm commitment through both military aid and financial backing reaffirms its role as a key strategic partner in Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression.

As Starmer and European leaders push for stronger defence cooperation, the coming weeks will be critical in determining how long-lasting and effective Western support for Ukraine remains.
