UN Demands Global Action for Women’s Rights and Equality
New York [US], March 8 – As the world marks International Women’s Day 2025, the United Nations (UN) has called on the global community to take bold action in ensuring equal rights, opportunities, and empowerment for all women and girls.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in his official message, emphasized that when women succeed, society prospers.
“When women and girls can rise, we all thrive. Yet, instead of mainstreaming equal rights, we are seeing the mainstreaming of misogyny,” Guterres warned.
He urged governments, businesses, and institutions worldwide to eliminate barriers to equality and prioritize investments that empower women.
International Women’s Day 2025 Theme: ‘For ALL Women and Girls’
This year’s International Women’s Day is celebrated under the theme:
“For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”
The theme focuses on empowering the next generation—particularly young women and adolescent girls—to be at the forefront of lasting societal change.
“When the doors of equal opportunity are open for women and girls, everyone wins. Equal societies are more prosperous and peaceful—and the foundation of sustainable development,” Guterres stated.
Key Areas for Action: UN’s Call to Governments and Institutions
The UN has outlined a global action plan to close gender gaps and create a more inclusive future:
✔ Unlock financing for gender equality: Governments must prioritize investments in women’s empowerment.
✔ Equal pay & work opportunities: Close the gender pay gap and expand access to decent jobs.
✔ End violence against women: Strengthen laws and enforce action to protect women and girls from all forms of violence.
✔ Full participation in decision-making: Women must have equal representation in leadership, governance, and peacebuilding.
✔ Break barriers in STEM fields: Encourage more women and girls to enter science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
A Global Blueprint for Gender Equality
The United Nations Pact for the Future and the Global Digital Compact serve as blueprints to guide global efforts toward equality and women’s empowerment.
“We need urgent action to make equal rights a reality. When women and girls can rise, we all thrive,” Guterres concluded.
