UN Security Council Condemns “Reprehensible” Kashmir Terror Attack, Demands Swift Justice
New York [US], April 26:
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has issued a firm condemnation of the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, calling it a “reprehensible act of terrorism” that claimed 26 lives and injured many others. The Council demanded that the perpetrators be brought to justice without delay.
In a press release issued on April 25, Council President Jérôme Bonnafont of France expressed deep condolences to the victims’ families and extended solidarity to the governments of India and Nepal. He also wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the attack.
The UNSC emphasized that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations remains one of the gravest threats to international peace and security. The Council reaffirmed that no political, ideological, or religious justification can legitimize the targeting of innocent civilians.
In a strong call for action, the statement urged all countries to cooperate under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions to hold accountable the perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors of the attack. This includes sharing intelligence, extraditing suspects, and cutting off financial lifelines to terrorist organizations.
The Council highlighted the need for a coordinated and lawful global response to terrorism, reaffirming its commitment to the principles of the UN Charter, international human rights, and humanitarian law. It called on all member states to adopt a comprehensive strategy to combat terrorism while upholding fundamental freedoms and the rule of law.
The UNSC’s unified message comes amid growing international concern over the surge in terrorist activities in volatile regions, with Jammu and Kashmir remaining a key flashpoint.
This strong response from the world’s top security body adds to the global outcry and reinforces the demand for justice, solidarity, and a collective stand against impunity for such brutal acts.
