US Gold Card Scheme Off to a Flying Start: $5 Billion Raised in a Single Day, Says Trump's Commerce Secretary
March 25, 2025: Washington DC – Former President Donald Trump’s newly announced US Gold Card scheme — offering permanent US residency for $5 million — is already making headlines, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick claiming that 1,000 Gold Cards were sold in a single day, injecting $5 billion into the US economy in just 24 hours.

Speaking on the popular ‘All-In Podcast’, Lutnick revealed, “The program will officially launch in about two weeks. Elon Musk is currently building the backend software for the system. But just yesterday, we sold a thousand.”
The Gold Card, also dubbed the Golden Visa, provides permanent residency with an option for citizenship, without requiring global income taxation — a major draw for ultra-wealthy global citizens. “If you are a U.S. citizen, you pay global taxes. But with this, you become a U.S. permanent resident, not a citizen, and avoid that,” Lutnick explained.
He elaborated, “People will pay $5 million to get the right to live in America indefinitely, without being taxed on their global income. They’ll be vetted thoroughly, and the government retains the right to revoke the Gold Card in case of any unlawful behavior.”
Using a personal example, Lutnick said, “If I were not American, I’d buy six — one for me, my wife, and each of my four kids — so if anything went wrong in my country, I could fly to the US and start over. That’s the value of this card.”
According to internal research, around 37 million people globally could afford the Gold Card. Trump administration officials believe “at least a million could be sold” over time. Proceeds from the program will go toward reducing the U.S. fiscal deficit or national debt.
Trump, who announced the scheme in February 2025, has said there will be no cap on the number of Gold Cards issued annually. If the initial surge is any indication, this could become one of the most lucrative immigration programs in history.
