Trump clears proposal that could trigger 500 percent tariffs over Russian oil imports

The bill allows the US administration to penalise countries that knowingly purchase Russian petroleum and uranium products.
Introduced by Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal the legislation targets nations buying discounted Russian crude to cut funding for Moscow’s war in Ukraine. Graham named India China and Brazil as key countries that could face pressure if Russia refuses peace talks or violates any future agreement.
The move may strain India US trade ties as New Delhi maintains its energy decisions are guided by national interest and affordability. Graham said Trump’s backing gives Washington strong leverage over major Russian oil buyers amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
