Uttarakhand CM Dhami Pays Tribute to Soldiers on Vijay Diwas, Honours 1971 War Heroes

Pushkar Singh Dhami hails the courage of Indian soldiers on the 53rd Vijay Diwas anniversary, commemorating the 1971 Liberation War victory.

Dehradun (Uttarakhand), December 16: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Indian Army, ex-servicemen, and the people of the nation on the occasion of Vijay Diwas, commemorating India’s historic victory in the 1971 Liberation War.

“This day showcases the unparalleled valour and honour of the Indian Army. Our brave soldiers are always prepared to protect the nation, and we take immense pride in their courage and commitment,” Dhami stated in a message from the Chief Minister’s Office.

The Chief Minister also paid homage to the sacrifices of Indian soldiers, saying, “The supreme sacrifices made by our brave soldiers to safeguard the nation’s borders will always be remembered.”

Vijay Diwas, observed on December 16 annually, marks India’s decisive victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, leading to the creation of Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan). The war concluded with Pakistan signing the Instrument of Surrender in Dhaka after a 13-day conflict. Approximately 3,900 Indian soldiers lost their lives, and 9,851 were injured during the war.

“We are immensely proud of the bravery of our soldiers, and the entire country salutes their indomitable spirit and courage,” Dhami said.

India and Bangladesh are jointly commemorating the 53rd anniversary of Vijay Diwas this year with ceremonial exchanges of war veterans and serving officers.

Eight Indian war veterans and two serving officers of the Indian Armed Forces have arrived in Dhaka to participate in Bangladesh’s Victory Day celebrations. Similarly, eight Muktijoddhas (Bangladeshi freedom fighters) and two serving officers of the Bangladesh Armed Forces are attending Vijay Diwas events in Kolkata, the Indian Army confirmed.

President Droupadi Murmu marked the eve of Vijay Diwas by attending an ‘At-Home’ reception at Army House in New Delhi. The event was hosted by Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi and attended by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan.
