Vandersay's Magic Spins Sri Lanka to Victory: Leads 1-0 in Series
Jeffrey Vandersay delivered a stunning performance, leaving India’s batters baffled and securing a 32-run victory for Sri Lanka in the second ODI on Sunday at the R Premadasa Stadium. This win gives Sri Lanka a 1-0 lead in the series.
On a pitch favoring spinners, the Indian team struggled under the new head coach Gautam Gambhir, experiencing their first defeat. “Sri Lanka” chants echoed through the stadium as skipper Charith Asalanka and his team showcased their superior spin bowling.
Replacing the injured Wanindu Hasaranga, Vandersay stepped up and made an immediate impact, dismantling India’s top order while defending Sri Lanka’s total of 240/9. India captain Rohit Sharma provided a strong start, scoring 64 runs, but his dismissal opened the floodgates.
Vandersay’s exceptional spell saw him take five crucial wickets, reducing India to 147/6. Axar Patel’s valiant 44-run effort couldn’t rescue India from the spin trap set by Sri Lanka. Asalanka also contributed with three wickets, leading to India being bowled out for 208 in 42.2 overs.
Earlier, Sri Lanka opted to bat after winning the toss. Despite losing Pathum Nissanka for a first-ball duck, Avishka Fernando (40) and Kusal Mendis (30) formed a solid partnership, scoring 74 runs together. Washington Sundar’s effective spell (3/30) and Kuldeep Yadav’s support (2/33) kept Sri Lanka in check. Contributions from Dunith Wellalage (39) and Kamindu Mendis (40) helped Sri Lanka reach a defendable total.
The match showcased thrilling moments, with India’s spinners also making an impact, but Vandersay’s magic ultimately led Sri Lanka to a well-deserved victory.
Sri Lanka: 240/9 (Kamindu Mendis 40, Avishka Fernando 40, Dunith Wellalage 39; Washington Sundar 3/30)
India: 208 (Rohit Sharma 64, Axar Patel 44; Jeffrey Vandersay 6-33)
