Mumbai, October 18, 2024: The highly anticipated action series Citadel: Honey Bunny, starring Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, is all set to premiere on Prime Video on November 7.
Directed by the dynamic duo Raj & DK, this Indian installment of the global Citadel franchise brings a fresh twist to action and espionage, set against the colorful backdrop of the 1990s.
Discussing the casting, director Raj shared their vision for bringing Varun Dhawan on board in a completely new light. “We wanted Varun in a new avatar. And we realized that he had never done action before, not a full-blown action role. He got super excited when he realized it was set in the 90s because he had so many memories and anecdotes from his father’s sets,” Raj explained. “The diversity was perfect for Varun, as he plays a character with two timelines—one side is exuberant, lively, and colorful, while the other is more serious and mature.”
Citadel: Honey Bunny is set apart from the original series, with its own unique flavor and storyline. “This is a standalone series of its own,” said DK. “We were all very clear, including the Russo brothers, that this show will have its own tone and flavor. We wanted to make a show that is true to India, with Indian culture and sensibilities, while standing up to world standards. We never wanted to make a show that looks like a Hollywood show; we wanted to make a show that looks like it comes from India.”
The series promises to deliver innovative and thrilling action sequences. “We love to design our action sequences,” DK said. “We worked with action director Yannick, who we collaborated with on Family Man season two, and Ajaz Bhai from Mumbai. We come up with ideas of how to do things that nobody else has done before, but we still have to do it in a very ‘Jugaad’ way. That’s been the challenge.”
Written by Sita R Menon and helmed by Raj & DK, Citadel: Honey Bunny is part of a global franchise executive produced by the Russo Brothers’ AGBO. The Citadel series explores the complex world of espionage, focusing on a spy agency and its enemy syndicate, Manticore. Each regional series brings a unique cultural identity, creating a global yet locally rooted viewing experience.
Citadel: Honey Bunny will begin streaming on Prime Video on November 7, and fans are eagerly awaiting the blend of 90s nostalgia, gripping action, and Indian storytelling.
