Veteran Actor Michael McStay, Star of ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘No Hiding Place’, Dies at 92

May 22, 2025: Michael McStay, the esteemed British actor known for his memorable roles in Doctor Who and No Hiding Place, has passed away at the age of 92.

The news was confirmed on May 20 in a heartfelt Facebook statement from a family representative, who described McStay as “an actor of the highest standing, a talented writer, and a devoted family man.” He died peacefully in his sleep on May 18, shortly after enjoying a lunch with his children.

McStay rose to fame playing Sergeant Perryman in more than 80 episodes of the ITV crime drama No Hiding Place, becoming a familiar face to TV audiences across the UK.

He also appeared in the cult-favorite Doctor Who, portraying Derek Moberley in two episodes. Though his stint on the show was brief, McStay embraced its passionate fanbase. In a podcast interview recorded in May 2024 for Doctor Who: Toby Hadoke’s Time Travels, he remarked: “The fans you meet through Doctor Who are like friends. They want to like you, and they want to love the show.”

Over his expansive career, McStay appeared in numerous British TV classics including The Black Arrow, Park Ranger, Spy at Evening, EastEnders, and Ted and Alice. His film credits include Robbery (1967) and The Stick Up (1977).

His final screen appearance was in 2011 on ITV’s Coronation Street, where he played Alan Hoyle.

Reflecting on his decades-long journey in acting, McStay shared during the podcast: “You have to want to do it. I’ve always wanted to do it. And I had some good friends along the way that helped me.”

He is survived by his wife, actress Jennifer Clulow, and their two sons.
