To Lam vows stability and rapid development after securing backing from National Assembly of Vietnam
April 7, 2026: To Lam on Tuesday pledged to maintain peace and stability as his top priority after being elected president by the National Assembly of Vietnam. Addressing lawmakers after his swearing-in, Lam said stability would form the foundation for fast and sustainable growth, while also promising to improve people’s livelihoods so that the benefits of development reach all sections of society. His nomination received overwhelming support, with all 495 deputies present endorsing it.
Lam’s elevation marks a significant shift in Vietnam’s political structure, as he now holds both the positions of party chief and state president—roles traditionally separated. Analysts say the consolidation of power resembles governance models seen in countries like China under Xi Jinping, raising questions about increased centralisation even as it may enable faster decision-making. Lawmakers are also set to elect a new prime minister to replace Pham Minh Chinh.
Highlighting his reform agenda, Lam called his new role a “sacred and noble duty” and outlined plans for a new growth model focused on accelerating decision-making and boosting private sector participation. His recent initiatives include administrative restructuring, cutting ministries, and pushing major infrastructure projects. He also emphasised defence self-reliance, while reiterating goals of sustained economic growth and improved living standards for citizens.
