Vinesh Phogat Makes History, Reaches Olympic Final in Wrestling

India’s star grappler Vinesh Phogat continued her impressive run at the Paris Olympics by securing a dominating win over Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the women’s 50kg wrestling semi-finals. With this victory, Vinesh became the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final, ensuring India’s fourth medal at the ongoing games.

Following her triumphant match, Vinesh waved to the crowd, acknowledging their unwavering support. “The crowd’s energy was incredible, and it really pushed me to give my best,” she said.

Vinesh adopted an aggressive strategy from the onset, but Guzman Lopez’s firm defense initially kept the bout scoreless. However, Lopez received a passivity warning and had thirty seconds to score. Vinesh capitalized on this, scoring the first point. She maintained this slim lead into the second half, where her aggression paid off as she managed to pin Lopez, extending her lead to 5-0. Despite a late surge from Lopez, Vinesh deflected all attacks, securing her place in the final.

Earlier in the day, Vinesh shone in the quarter-finals against Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki of Japan. Susaki led 1-0 at the end of the first period, but Vinesh’s stellar performance in the second period turned the bout in her favor, ending Susaki’s 82-match unbeaten streak with a 3-2 victory.

In the quarter-finals against Ukraine’s Oksana Livach, Vinesh took an early 2-0 lead in the first period. Despite a strong fightback from Livach in the second period, Vinesh held off the challenge, securing her semi-final spot.

Vinesh Phogat’s historic achievement not only highlights her exceptional talent and determination but also marks a significant milestone for Indian women’s wrestling on the global stage. As she prepares for the final, the entire nation stands behind her, cheering for another golden triumph.
