Virat Kohli To Get Penalised For Heated Exchange With Sam Konstas At Boxing Day Test? ICC To Review

December 26, 2024: The incident involving Virat Kohli and Australian debutant Sam Konstas during the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground has certainly drawn attention, prompting a review by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

According to cricket.com.au, the altercation occurred when both players walked into each other on the field, leading to a verbal exchange. Australia opener Usman Khawaja stepped in to try and diffuse the tension, even placing an arm around Kohli in an attempt to calm things down. Umpire Michael Gough also intervened to mediate the situation.

The ICC is now set to review the exchange, with match referee Andy Pycroft expected to look into the matter. The incident caught the eye of the ICC due to its potential violation of the Code of Conduct, specifically regarding inappropriate physical contact. The relevant clause of the Code prohibits any form of reckless or deliberate physical contact between players, and walking or running into another player—whether it be intentional or negligent—could result in sanctions.

If the matter is adjudicated as a Level Two offense, either Kohli or Konstas could receive three or four demerit points, which could impact their disciplinary record. This review comes as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series is level at 1-1, with both sides eager to take the lead in this crucial third Test, which also has implications for the ICC World Test Championship standings.

Interestingly, this clash took place after Konstas had impressed with a 60-run knock off 65 balls during his debut innings. The young batter played aggressively, hitting 6 fours and 2 sixes, but his innings was eventually ended by Ravindra Jadeja.

The review will be significant not just for the two players involved but also for setting a tone regarding player behavior in high-stakes encounters like the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The incident will likely be closely monitored by fans, media, and cricketing authorities alike.

Let me know if you’d like to dive deeper into the specifics of the ICC’s disciplinary processes or how such incidents typically unfold!
