“We Were Outplayed by a Fantastic Team”: Jos Buttler

England Captain Acknowledges India’s Dominance After Crushing 142-Run Defeat

Ahmedabad (Gujarat), February 13: England captain Jos Buttler admitted that his team was “outplayed by a fantastic team” after suffering a 142-run defeat against India in the final ODI in Ahmedabad, leading to a 3-0 series whitewash. Despite moments of promise, England struggled to sustain their performance against a dominant Indian side.

“Similar to the whole tour, we threatened in stages but were outplayed by a fantastic team. Our approach is the right one, it’s just that we haven’t executed well. We need to find ways to play that style better,” Buttler said after the loss, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

India’s Batting Prowess and England’s Collapse

India set a formidable 356/7 on the board, thanks to a brilliant 112-run knock from Shubman Gill, supported by Shreyas Iyer (78) and Virat Kohli (52). Chasing the total, England started aggressively but faltered after Arshdeep Singh’s double strike, leading to another batting collapse as the visitors were bowled out for 214.

Praising Gill’s innings, Buttler acknowledged the challenge posed by India’s batting depth.

“They put a really good score on the board. Shubman played a great innings, and we were going to have to play really well to chase that down. We got off to a great start again, but it’s a familiar story for us. We need to find a way to extend that and bat for longer,” he said.

With this loss, England’s struggles in the limited-overs format persist, raising concerns ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, while India’s dominant performance solidifies their status as top contenders for the global tournament.
