In West Bengal’s political landscape, two defining factors are shaping the upcoming electoral battle—“Chaakri” (jobs) and women voters. Both the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are centering their strategies around these crucial themes.

Women Voters: The Decisive Force

With nearly 50% of the electorate being women, this group continues to play a pivotal role in the political success of Mamata Banerjee. Welfare schemes such as Kanyashree and Lakshmir Bhandar have significantly strengthened her support base among women.

Ahead of the 2026 elections, the state government has increased the Lakshmir Bhandar assistance to ₹1,500, aiming to reinforce this connection.

Welfare vs Reality

While the financial aid is welcomed, many women express mixed feelings. Unlike other states where cash transfer schemes are paired with employment opportunities, several women in Bengal find themselves becoming the primary earners of their households.

The ₹1,500 support, though helpful, is often seen as insufficient to meet rising expenses. For many, it does not translate into true financial independence but rather adds to their responsibilities.

Jobs Remain A Key Concern

A major challenge remains the lack of large-scale employment opportunities. With companies like Google and Microsoft yet to establish significant operations in the state, job creation has lagged behind expectations.

This gap between welfare support and employment opportunities is emerging as a critical election issue.

BJP’s Strategy: Focus On ‘Chaakri’

Sensing an opportunity, the BJP is focusing its campaign on job creation. The party is promoting the idea of a “double-engine government”, promising that alignment with the central leadership would attract industries and boost employment in the state.

The Core Question

As Bengal heads toward elections, the central question remains:

Will welfare schemes continue to secure women’s loyalty, or will the demand for sustainable employment reshape voting preferences?

The answer could ultimately determine whether Mamata Banerjee retains her stronghold—or faces a significant political challenge this time.
