Viral videos and social media posts about missing community dogs, including Kaddu and Dholu, have triggered a heated debate over animal welfare laws, airport safety, and alleged illegal relocation of sterilised strays at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi.
Viral Outrage Over Missing Community Dogs
A growing online uproar over missing stray dogs at Delhi’s main airport has ignited a wider debate on animal welfare practices and public safety.
The controversy centres around a long-time community dog named Kaddu, who had reportedly lived near the airport premises for over a decade, and another dog known as Dholu or Brownie, both of whom have not been seen recently.
Social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), have been flooded with posts asking: “Where is Kaddu? Where is Dholu?” The viral attention has brought scrutiny to dog management practices at the airport.
The issue escalated after animal rights activists alleged that several sterilised and vaccinated dogs living around the airport were forcibly removed. Videos circulating online purportedly showed dogs being transported in distressed conditions, raising allegations of mistreatment.
Activists Raise Questions Over Dog Removal
Animal welfare advocates claim that the missing dogs were harmless and had lived peacefully in the area for years.
One activist, Priyanshi, shared videos online questioning the airport’s actions. She alleged that dogs were removed despite no confirmed cases of aggression.
Kaddu, described as an elderly and toothless dog, has reportedly been missing since March 26, prompting concern among animal lovers.
Another social media user, Sundeep Sharma, posted footage showing Kaddu’s calm behaviour and asked authorities to justify her removal.
Meanwhile, Yash Saghal claimed that sanitation workers took the dog away and questioned why CCTV footage had not been shared publicly.
Adding to concerns, another widely circulated video allegedly showed dogs being unloaded from a vehicle in a disoriented condition, with users speculating that sedatives might have been used during transport.
What Indian Law Says About Stray Dog Relocation
The controversy has also revived discussions around India’s animal welfare laws governing community dogs.
Under existing guidelines, sterilised and vaccinated stray dogs are generally required to be returned to their original location after treatment. Experts note that relocation can disrupt territorial balance among animals, potentially increasing aggression and exposing relocated dogs to unfamiliar dangers.
Animal welfare groups argue that removing elderly dogs—especially those accustomed to specific environments—raises ethical and legal concerns.
Activists claim that several dogs around the airport had been sterilised and vaccinated, and removing them without due process would violate established animal welfare norms.
Airport Authorities Deny Relocation Allegations
In response to the allegations, authorities at Indira Gandhi International Airport denied that any dogs had been relocated.
Officials described the allegations as “unfounded” and “misleading,” stating that the airport follows a structured dog management programme aligned with government and Animal Welfare Board of India guidelines.
According to the official statement, the programme includes:
- Regular feeding and vaccination
- Sterilisation of stray dogs
- Designated feeding zones located away from passenger areas
Authorities also acknowledged awareness of Kaddu’s disappearance through social media posts and said they hope the dog is safe.
Safety Concerns Cited Amid Rising Dog Bite Cases
Airport officials highlighted increasing safety concerns as a key issue behind stricter management practices.
According to their statement, more than 30 dog bite incidents have been reported within the airport ecosystem over the past three months.
Authorities further stated that a brown dog had bitten two individuals on March 30 and March 31 and was later seen chasing passengers. The dog was reportedly restrained safely and released afterward.
Officials also urged visitors not to feed stray animals in public areas, stating that uncontrolled feeding can lead to safety risks.
Public Opinion Divided Over Animal Welfare And Safety
The controversy has sharply divided public opinion online.
Many users criticised the alleged treatment of the dogs, describing it as cruelty against helpless animals and demanding accountability from authorities.
Others, however, supported stricter measures, arguing that sensitive zones such as airports require higher safety standards.
Some social media users have called for relocating stray dogs to shelters, while others insist that community dogs must remain in their designated territories under existing welfare laws.
Unanswered Questions Keep Debate Alive
As calls to “Bring Kaddu back” continue to trend online, the incident has highlighted the ongoing challenge of balancing animal welfare with public safety in densely populated urban spaces.
With Kaddu still missing and no definitive explanation available, scrutiny of stray animal management practices at high-security locations like airports is expected to intensify in the coming days.
