Why Did Elon Musk Call Trump’s Bill 'Insane'?
June 30, 2025: Tech mogul Elon Musk has launched a scathing attack on a Senate bill backed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, calling it a political disaster in the making for the Republican Party.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Musk didn’t hold back:“Polls show that this bill is political suicide for the Republican Party,” he wrote, later branding the legislation “utterly insane and destructive.”
He added that the bill would “destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country.” The legislation, often referred to by Trump as his “big, beautiful bill,” narrowly advanced in the Senate despite internal GOP resistance. Senators Rand Paul and Thom Tillis voiced strong objections—Paul over a projected $5 trillion debt hike and Tillis due to a $38.9 billion loss in Medicaid funds for North Carolina.

Musk had previously labeled the bill a “disgusting abomination” and slammed lawmakers who supported it. “Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong,” he posted in early June.
Meanwhile, Trump is urging Senate Republicans to override the ruling of Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough, who blocked certain Medicaid provisions in the bill. Trump backed Rep. Greg Steube’s call to bypass MacDonough’s authority, calling her an “unelected staffer” standing in the way of vital reforms.“An unelected Senate Staffer should not be allowed to hurt the Republicans’ Bill,” Trump declared on Truth Social.
Overturning the parliamentarian’s ruling would require a rare move: a presiding senator must issue a contrary decision backed by 51 votes.
Senate Democrats are also watching closely, especially regarding whether Trump’s 2017 tax cuts can be made permanent without violating budget rules. If found in violation, Republicans could be forced to revise the bill mid-debate.
The bill’s future remains uncertain as tensions escalate between GOP leadership, dissenting Republicans, and a fiercely critical Musk.
