Wildfire Devastates 12,500 Acres of Dartmoor Moorland Amid Record UK Heat
May 6, 2025: A massive wildfire has scorched approximately 12,500 acres (50.6 square kilometres) of moorland in Dartmoor, located in south-west England. The blaze, which erupted on Sunday, prompted numerous emergency calls and required firefighters to battle the flames for nearly 24 hours before it was finally brought under control on Monday.
Authorities advised the public to steer clear of the Merrivale and Okehampton areas during the incident due to the fire’s unpredictable behaviour, influenced by rapidly changing weather conditions. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service highlighted the challenges posed by shifting winds and dry vegetation.
The wildfire follows an unprecedented heatwave in the UK, which recorded its warmest start to May on record. Temperatures soared to 29.3 degrees Celsius in south-west London on Thursday afternoon.
