Wildfires Rage Across Israel as PM Declares 'National Emergency'; Flames Threaten Jerusalem
Jerusalem, May 1: Massive wildfires continue to sweep across Israel, including areas near Jerusalem, as 155 firefighting teams battle to contain the inferno fueled by extreme heat and high winds, The Times of Israel reports.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared the crisis a “national emergency”, warning that the fires could reach Jerusalem if not swiftly controlled. The situation is being described as the largest wildfire outbreak in over a decade, according to Fire Chief Eyal Caspi.
Despite continuous efforts, Israel’s Fire and Rescue Service confirmed Thursday morning that they had “not gained control” over the blazes, highlighting the scale and complexity of the emergency.

Emergency response teams are reportedly prioritizing residential zones, infrastructure, and forest reserves most at risk. Evacuations are underway in several towns, and the military has been mobilized to support containment and rescue operations.
