Will Shreyas Iyer Succeed Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI Captain? Deets Inside
June 8, 2025: Shreyas Iyer Joins Official Race To Be India’s Next ODI Captain, Says Report
With Indian cricket gradually transitioning into a new leadership era, a major development has surfaced around the 50-over captaincy slot. As per a report in The Indian Express, Shreyas Iyer has “officially joined” the race to take over as India’s next white-ball captain, once Rohit Sharma steps aside from ODIs.

The 2025 IPL season proved pivotal for Iyer, who led the Punjab Kings with strategic clarity and consistency, earning praise for his leadership skills beyond just his batting. This resurgence has helped change perceptions that he was merely a figurehead captain during his IPL-winning campaign with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024—where many credited Gautam Gambhir for the team’s success.

According to the report, a senior BCCI official has confirmed Iyer’s rise in contention:
“Right now he just plays ODIs but after this IPL, we can’t keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus he has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race.”
India currently employs a three-captain format across formats—Shubman Gill for Tests, Rohit Sharma for ODIs, and Suryakumar Yadav for T20Is. But the setup is increasingly viewed as unsustainable in the long run. Iyer’s elevation could be a move toward consolidating leadership in white-ball formats.

While Rohit Sharma has not yet confirmed his ODI retirement plans, past trends suggest the decision could come sooner than expected—given his earlier exits from Test and T20I captaincy.
Shreyas Iyer’s growing stature as a dependable batter, combined with his tactical maturity and temperament under pressure, could make him a natural successor in India’s leadership puzzle. The coming months will likely define his future in all three formats—as a player, and potentially, as captain.
