July 6, 2025: Taylor Fritz advanced to the Wimbledon 2025 quarter-finals in lightning-fast fashion on Sunday after Australia’s Jordan Thompson was forced to retire mid-match due to an injury. The match ended with the score at 6-1, 3-0 in Fritz’s favour and lasted just 41 minutes.
Fritz’s Tough Road to Round Four
Before this relatively easy win, the American fifth seed had to grind through two five-set thrillers. He edged past Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Gabriel Diallo in his opening two matches. In the third round, Fritz overcame Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in four tough sets. Each of those matches pushed him to his physical and mental limits.
Sunday’s Match: Over Before It Really Began
On Sunday, however, things played out very differently. Fritz came out all guns blazing and broke Thompson twice in the first set, wrapping it up in just 21 minutes. He then took a commanding 3-0 lead in the second set.
That’s when trouble struck for the Aussie. Thompson took a medical time-out and appeared to be suffering from a thigh injury. He returned to the court but clearly wasn’t moving freely. After falling 40-0 behind in the fourth game, Thompson decided to retire from the match.
Fritz to Face Khachanov in Quarter-Finals
With this win, Taylor Fritz enters his third Wimbledon quarter-final, continuing his strong run on grass this season. Next, he will face Karen Khachanov, the 17th seed from Russia. It’s expected to be a closely contested match, as both players are known for their powerful games and solid performances on the big stage.
