Women's Ashes: Australia Crush England With A Dominant Win By Innings And 122 Runs
February 1, 2025: Australia defeated England by an innings and 122 runs in the one-off Women’s Ashes Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday, clinching a historic 16-0 whitewash in the multi-format series.
Australia’s dominant victory was built on two standout centuries in the first innings from Annabel Sutherland (163) and Beth Mooney (106). Their efforts helped Australia post a formidable 440 in their first innings. Mooney’s century marked her first-ever Test ton and made her the first Australian woman to score a century across all formats of the game. She joins the ranks of just four women players to achieve this feat, including England’s Heather Knight, Tammy Beaumont, and South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt. Mooney is also the fourth Australian, after Shane Watson, Glenn Maxwell, and David Warner, to accomplish this.
In response, England was dismissed for just 170 in their first innings, with Alana King leading the charge with a brilliant 4/45. After Australia’s substantial lead, the visitors crumbled once again in their second innings, managing only 148 runs. King’s exceptional bowling performance continued, as she claimed 5/53 to finish with career-best figures of 9/98 in the match. Alongside her, Ash Gardner also played a key role with the ball, taking 4/39.
This result marked Australia’s clean sweep of the Women’s Ashes, having previously won all the ODIs and T20Is by a 3-0 margin. With this remarkable win, Australia not only claimed the Ashes but also ensured an unbeaten run throughout the entire series.
Australia’s dominant performance in both batting and bowling left England trailing far behind, and the victory secured their first-ever Ashes whitewash since the introduction of the multi-format points system in 2013.
