WWE Acquires Mexico’s AAA Wrestling Promotion, Joint Show ‘Worlds Collide’ Set for June in Los Angeles

WWE deepens its global expansion with the acquisition of legendary Mexican lucha libre promotion AAA; first joint event slated for June 7 at Kia Forum, promising a historic WWE-AAA crossover.

📍Los Angeles | April 21, 2025

In a major cross-border wrestling milestone, WWE has officially acquired Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA) — one of Mexico’s most iconic wrestling promotions — from Mexican holding company Fillip. The announcement was made during the WrestleMania 41 countdown show, marking a historic moment for the global wrestling landscape.

The deal is expected to close in Q3 2025, pending customary regulatory approvals. AAA will continue to be jointly operated by WWE, Fillip, and the founding Peña family, ensuring its legacy remains intact.

“AAA has a rich cultural heritage with some of the most passionate fans in the world,” said Paul “Triple H” Levesque, WWE Chief Content Officer. “We’re honored to work with the Peña family and Fillip to take AAA into a global future.”

  • The event will showcase talent from both WWE and AAA, with the match card to be announced in the coming weeks.
  • The show is expected to feature crossover dream matches that blend WWE’s global star power with AAA’s rich lucha libre legacy.

🤝 Legacy and Continuity

Founded in 1992 by Antonio Peña, AAA has been at the forefront of lucha libre culture for over three decades. The promotion has produced and hosted legends like Rey Mysterio, Eddie Guerrero, Pentagón Jr. (Penta), and Fénix.

“AAA has been a family-run promotion for over 30 years,” said Dorian Roldán Peña, AAA General Manager. “Our trust could not be better placed than with one of the biggest names in sports entertainment.”

Alberto Fasja, Chairman of Fillip, and co-CEO Hugo López-Velarde added: “This venture with WWE and TKO will secure the future of AAA and help elevate it to new heights.”

🌐 Global Expansion Strategy

This acquisition is part of WWE’s broader international strategy, under parent company TKO Group Holdings, to strengthen its presence in Latin America and beyond. With Netflix already hosting WWE shows globally and WWE Raw debuting on the platform earlier this year, the move signals a strategic push toward wrestling global unification.
