Yashasvi Jaiswal, Harshit Rana Shine As They Receive Maiden ODI Caps In India’s Camp

February 6, 2025: In a heartwarming scene before the first ODI between India and England, two young talents, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Harshit Rana, were handed their maiden caps by captain Rohit Sharma and pacer Mohammed Shami, respectively.

The Indian squad gathered in a huddle, where head coach Gautam Gambhir delivered an inspiring pep talk. After Gambhir’s words of motivation, Rohit spoke to the team, and then, the debutants were presented with their first ODI caps, marking a significant milestone in their careers.

Jaiswal, who has already impressed in T20Is and Tests, was considered one of India’s rising stars even before his ODI debut. In just 19 Tests, he has accumulated 1,798 runs at an impressive average of 52.88, including four centuries and 10 fifties. Jaiswal’s aggressive nature and ability to dominate the bowlers is evident from his List-A numbers as well, with 1,511 runs in 32 matches and a strike rate of 65.66. He also has a standout T20I record, with 723 runs in 23 matches at a strike rate of 164.31.

On the other hand, Harshit Rana, although a more recent addition to India’s cricketing scene, has shown promise with both ball and bat. In his Test appearances, he has taken four wickets at an average of 50.75, and in T20Is, he impressed with a stellar spell of 3/33 against England. Harshit’s List-A numbers reflect his consistency, with 22 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 23.45.

Both players’ journeys to the Indian ODI squad have been eventful, with Harshit’s match-winning performance as a concussion substitute in the fourth T20I being a particular talking point. His ability to deliver under pressure sparked debates, especially among England fans, with captain Jos Buttler expressing his discontent.
