World Cup-winning former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh on Thursday emphasised the importance of playing multiple sports, urging cricketers to take up golf early in their careers to better cope with stress.
Yuvraj, who has developed a strong passion for golf after retiring from international cricket, has been appointed as the brand ambassador of the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL). Speaking at the unveiling of the league’s 10 franchises, he reflected on how golf could have positively impacted his own cricketing journey.
“Cricketers should play golf alongside cricket. I wish I had started earlier—it would have helped me in my career. Golf allows you to unwind and relieves stress,” he said.
Highlighting global trends, Yuvraj pointed out that many international cricketers—especially from Australia, New Zealand, England, and South Africa—take up golf at a young age, integrating it into their sporting routine.
Addressing the perception of golf as an elite sport, he stressed that the game is becoming more accessible, particularly through public courses. He advocated for broader exposure at the grassroots level, encouraging children across India to explore different sports.
“Cricket is our biggest sport, no doubt, but golf is equally exciting and deserves attention. Every child should try multiple sports,” he said, adding that as a former India player, he feels responsible for contributing to the growth of other disciplines as well.
Yuvraj also expressed confidence that the IGPL will play a key role in popularising golf in India. He believes the league will generate interest among young audiences, boost viewership, and create financial opportunities within the sport.
“The league will bring excitement and visibility to golf. More kids will watch it, get inspired, and take it up. It will also help secure the future of aspiring players,” he added.
The upcoming IGPL season will feature 10 franchises and a total of 15 events throughout the year, including five international tournaments scheduled in Mauritius, Congo, South Africa, and two in Morocco.
In a significant development, LIV Golf has partnered with the league as a strategic collaborator, with IGPL also being integrated into the professional golf tour ecosystem.
The event was attended by tennis legend Leander Paes, who is a co-owner of the Kolkata franchise, along with IGPL CEO Uttam Singh Mundy.
