Zelenskyy Calls Trump, Ukraine Strikes Russian Airbase: What’s Next?

July 6, 2025: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed a “productive” phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday, where the two leaders discussed strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses amidst ongoing Russian aggression.

Taking to X, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the U.S.’s support. “We had an extremely fruitful conversation with the President of the United States yesterday, during which we discussed air defense. I’m grateful for the readiness to assist. Patriot systems are the key to defending against ballistic threats,” he wrote.

He also revealed that Ukraine has reached a new agreement with a leading U.S. company to increase collaboration on drone technology.

Meanwhile, Ukraine claimed responsibility for an airstrike on the Borisoglebsk airbase in Russia’s Voronezh region, targeting a depot containing glide bombs and training aircraft. Russian authorities have yet to comment.

The attack followed a wave of drone activity. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that Russian air defenses intercepted four Ukrainian drones heading for the capital, prompting a temporary halt in departures from one of Moscow’s major airports.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence said it shot down 48 Ukrainian drones over five hours on Saturday evening, and another 45 throughout the day. Overnight, it reported intercepting 94 drones.

On Ukraine’s side, the Air Force said Russia launched 322 drones and decoys overnight. Of these, 157 were shot down while 135 were likely disabled by electronic warfare.

Following the Zelenskyy call, Trump emphasized Ukraine’s need for Patriot missiles and expressed frustration after a separate phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “It just seems like he wants to go all the way and just keep killing people… It’s not good. I wasn’t happy with it,” Trump said.
