An autopsy revealed Payne suffered from 25 injuries, including fatal head trauma and both internal and external bleeding, consistent with the fall from such a height. Authorities have stated there is no evidence pointing to the involvement of a third party. However, as per protocol, the incident is being investigated as a “suspicious death.”
“All signs indicate that the musician was alone when the fall occurred and was likely experiencing an episode related to substance abuse,” said a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office.
Scene Details Unfold: A search of Payne’s hotel room revealed the presence of what are believed to be narcotics, alcoholic beverages, and numerous smashed objects. Law enforcement reported that the room was in “total disorder,” with broken furniture and scattered medications.
At the scene where Payne fell, police found a bottle of whiskey, a cellphone, and a lighter. Inside the luxury hotel room in Buenos Aires’ upscale Palermo district, they also discovered over-the-counter medications, energy supplements, and the anxiety medication Clonazepam. Investigators took additional evidence from the room, including fingerprints, a notebook, and Payne’s passport.
Before the incident, an emergency call made by a hotel employee warned authorities that Payne was severely intoxicated and trashing his room. Audio recordings obtained from the Buenos Aires security ministry revealed the staff’s concerns about Payne’s safety due to his erratic behavior.
“We have a guest who is intoxicated by drugs and alcohol. He’s breaking everything in the room… He’s conscious but out of control, and we are afraid for his life,” the hotel employee said during the 911 call.
Fame and Struggles: Payne, who had been open about his mental health challenges and battles with alcohol, was a beloved figure worldwide. Despite his struggles, he made significant contributions to One Direction, co-writing some of the band’s biggest hits, including “Story of My Life” and “Night Changes.”
One Direction’s rise to fame began in 2010 when Simon Cowell brought together Payne, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson on the UK’s “X Factor.” The group went on to sell 70 million records globally, with chart-topping singles like “What Makes You Beautiful” and “Live While We’re Young.”
As the investigation continues, Payne’s untimely death leaves behind a legacy of music and memories, while the world mourns a star gone too soon.
