8-Year-Old Swallows Magnetic Toy in ‘Magneto’ Moment, Escapes Serious Harm

Playful act turns into a medical emergency as magnetic balls lodge in boy’s stomach, prompting safety concerns over toy regulations.

February 4, 2025: An innocent attempt at mimicking a tongue piercing turned into a near-disastrous situation for 8-year-old Junior Gallon from England. While playing with small magnetic balls purchased from Amazon, Junior placed the magnets on either side of his tongue to imitate a tongue piercing. However, the powerful magnets unexpectedly snapped together and were swallowed.

Speaking to Kennedy News and Media, Junior’s mother, Mcfarlane, recounted the moment her son approached her in distress. “He came out of his room and said, ‘Mummy, I’ve got an emergency.’ He then burst into tears and told me he’d swallowed two magnets,” she said.

Despite repeated warnings not to put magnets near his mouth, Junior gave in to curiosity. “He thought it would be cool to mimic a tongue piercing but panicked the moment the magnets shot to the back of his throat,” Mcfarlane explained.

Immediate Medical Response:

Junior was rushed to the hospital, where an X-ray revealed the magnets clumped together in his stomach. Medical professionals highlighted the gravity of the situation, explaining that if the magnets had attached on opposite sides of the stomach or bowels, it could have caused severe internal injuries, including perforations. Fortunately, the magnets had fused together before ingestion, averting a more serious outcome.

Doctors advised the family to avoid exposing Junior to any magnetic or metallic items, including clothing with zippers, to prevent the magnets from shifting internally. Thankfully, a follow-up X-ray confirmed that the magnets exited his body naturally without complications.

Parental Relief and Safety Concerns:

“You hear horror stories about kids swallowing magnets or batteries, and it’s terrifying,” Mcfarlane admitted. “His dad and I were bracing ourselves for the worst. It was such a relief to know he was okay.”

In response to the incident, an Amazon spokesperson emphasized their commitment to safety, stating, “Safety is a top priority at Amazon. We require all products in our store to comply with applicable laws and regulations.” The magnetic toy in question has since been removed from the platform, with further investigations ongoing.
