Authorities Gear Up For Amrit Snan On Vasant Panchami At Mahakumbh

January 30, 2025: On Thursday, Uttar Pradesh’s Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar and Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh arrived in Prayagraj to inspect the aftermath of the deadly stampede that occurred on January 29 during the Mauni Amavasya festivities. The tragic incident, which took place at the Maha Kumbh, resulted in the loss of at least 30 lives and left more than 60 injured. The authorities are now focused on ensuring that the upcoming Amrit Snan on February 3, coinciding with Vasant Panchami, will be conducted safely and without incident.

The stampede happened early on January 29, as millions of devotees gathered at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers for the auspicious Mauni Amavasya holy dip. This was also the day of the second Shahi Snan. The stampede-like situation unfolded amidst the large crowds, with many people falling victim to the chaos.

DIG Vaibhav Krishna, overseeing Kumbh operations, addressed the preparations for the upcoming Amrit Snan, revealing that authorities had already initiated stricter measures. “We are reinforcing security, and all bridges are now reopened as the crowd size has reduced,” Krishna confirmed. Authorities are prepared to handle the expected rush while maintaining smooth operations, and no VIP movement will be allowed, similar to the precautionary measures taken on January 29.

In light of the tragedy, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh for the families of the deceased. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident. A three-member judicial commission will be headed by Justice Harsh Kumar, with former DG VK Gupta and retired IAS officer DK Singh as other members. The commission will submit its findings to the state government within a specified time frame.

The state’s leadership has been actively monitoring the situation throughout the day. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath even postponed his scheduled visit to Delhi for an election campaign to ensure oversight and management of the crisis.

Authorities are putting in place additional crowd control measures and ensuring that pilgrims can continue to take part in the sacred rituals, with heightened security and coordination between the police and other local agencies.
