Can Donald Trump Win the Nobel Peace Prize? Netanyahu Nominates US President Amid Global Buzz
Oslo/New York, July 8, 2025 — The Nobel Peace Prize, one of the most prestigious international honors, is again making headlines — this time over US President Donald Trump’s potential nomination. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has put forward Trump’s name for the award, citing his efforts on the international stage. If selected, Trump would become only the fifth American president to receive the prize after Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter, and Barack Obama.
However, procedural barriers may delay Trump’s consideration, and controversy around his presidency could influence the Nobel Committee’s decision.

According to Alfred Nobel’s will, the prize must go to the person “who has done the most or best to advance fellowship among nations, reduce standing armies, and promote peace congresses.” Recipients have historically come from all walks of life, not just heads of state or diplomats.

Nominee names are kept confidential for 50 years, though nominators may disclose their choices publicly — as Netanyahu has done with Trump.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee, a five-member body appointed by the Norwegian parliament, chooses the laureate. The panel consists largely of retired politicians and intellectuals, and their selection reflects the political composition of Norway’s parliament.
Given these timelines, Trump’s 2025 nomination by Netanyahu will be ineligible for this year’s prize, but may be considered for 2026, if resubmitted in time.
The Nobel Peace Prize has often been used to highlight political conflicts, and many laureates have been controversial figures in their time.
