Coldplay’s Mumbai Concert Sparks Mixed Reactions: “Energetic Performance, Subdued Crowd”

Coldplay’s return to India after nine years left fans divided, with some praising Chris Martin’s charisma while others criticised the audience’s lack of enthusiasm.

January 2025: Coldplay’s long-awaited comeback to India kicked off with a vibrant show at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. While Chris Martin and the band delivered a powerhouse performance, netizens were quick to point out the crowd’s surprisingly subdued response, sparking debates online.

Videos of the concert, especially the performance of the iconic track Hymn for the Weekend, went viral on social media. Observers noted that the audience barely sang along or cheered, leading to reactions like, “Quieter than a library” and “a really cold play.”

Many attributed the lukewarm energy to exorbitant ticket prices, which reportedly “priced out real fans” and filled the venue with influencers more focused on filming reels than enjoying the music. “Half the crowd was there just for Instagram pics,” wrote one user. Another quipped, “How can you not know Hymn for the Weekend? It was literally shot in Mumbai!”

Despite the crowd’s low energy, Chris Martin ensured unforgettable moments. He gave a heartfelt shoutout to cricketer Jasprit Bumrah, urging, “He needs to bowl,” and delighted fans by saying Jai Shri Ram after spotting a sign in the crowd. Martin also brought a fan on stage for an impromptu duet, showcasing his connection with the audience.

The concert generated massive buzz, with over a million fans scrambling for tickets online. However, resale prices—peaking at ₹1.5 lakh—sparked criticism about the accessibility for genuine fans.

Coldplay is set to perform two more shows at DY Patil Stadium on January 19 and 21 before heading to Ahmedabad for two performances at the Narendra Modi Stadium on January 25 and 26.
