A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea on Saturday morning, prompting initial tsunami warnings which were subsequently cancelled, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially warned of 1 to 3-meter-high waves along parts of the Papua New Guinea coastline. Smaller wave alerts of up to 0.3 meters for the Solomon Islands were also issued and later withdrawn.
